Choosing a profession is one of the most important choices in our life. While selecting a job, you choose not only the way to make money for a living, but also a way of life. Various external and internal factors impact a person’s choice of the profession. External factors that influence your choice are the prestige of the profession, its demand on the labor market, a salary, opinions, and desires of parents and relatives. Internal factors are capabilities, skills, abilities, and interests of the person that are taken into account while making a choice.

Being interested in doing something is not enough as you must also be able to physically or mentally do this job. And for that, you need certain abilities and skills, not simply interest. What is valuable in every specialist? First of all, their knowledge and professional competence in the sphere they are working. It is said that nobody cares about what you know, everybody cares about what you can do with what you know. It is true indeed, but it doesn’t mean you do not need to study and strive for more. Personal and professional growth has no end. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the majority of employees tend to make three to four major career changes during their 35 to 45 years of working.

When choosing a profession, it is necessary to pay attention to what you like doing and what brings you pleasure. For example, if you like organizing and managing other people, you need to occupy leading positions, most likely, it will fit professions that involve the ability to work with a team (managers, teachers, trainers, etc).

If you perfectly know your interests and personality type you are halfway to selecting the right profession and getting the dream job in the future. You can work according to your personality type. Use Holland’s Career Typology and pass the test to know which spheres you can be good at. If you do not know your features of character and traits, there are numerous approaches to help you identify and measure your characteristics. Among these approaches are Gordon Allport’s Trait Theory, Raymond Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, Eysenck’s Three Dimensions of Personality, The Five-Factor Theory of Personality and others.

All our life consists of choices. Having made one, we cut off many other possibilities, that is why, while making a choice of our future profession, we must carefully weigh all the pros and cons.
